As with many of life’s little situations, we’re often left with wanting more. And that statement is perfectly applicable to our home, with two third of Britons wanting to upsize.
Upsizing isn’t always practical, so an extension, or garage or loft conversion may be more favourable. However, an extension or conversion isn’t always possible. Thankfully, there are many tips and tricks you’re able to test to make your small home feel bigger.
Choose light colours
Using light colours doesn’t necessarily mean sticking to white or magnolia, either. Try beiges or icy blues, as such tones can make a room feel much larger than it actually is. Lighter walls will also help to reflect light, making the room feel bigger in an instant.
Stay organised
We’re all guilty of hoarding a collection of things we probably shouldn’t. We concede that parting with such items may be tough but, unfortunately, your clutter could be responsible for making your home feel even smaller than it is.
With this in mind, get rid of some things. And for the things you can’t part with, organise these items into a basket, or somewhere out of it. Keep the floor space free and bookshelves tidy. Storage options that take up minimal room are a huge yes.
Hang mirrors
Think of your favourite shop, or your favourite restaurant; it’s likely to be half the size you believe it to be. This is owed to their clever use of mirrors. You can follow this same trick by hanging mirrors on your walls. Use a group of small mirrors, or turn a full-length mirror on its side.
Choose furniture carefully
Consider a lofted bed – this will instantly help to create space! Not only are you maximising the use of your ceiling space, but you’re also freeing up the area underneath the bed.
For furniture elsewhere in the home, choose pieces with legs. Items with legs allow your eyes to work around them, affording the room with a more spacious feel.
Fill corners
Admittedly, corners can be hard to utilise, but by getting creative, you can maximise the use of your space. A corner bookshelf or dining room cabinet won’t take up any useful floor space, but it will add interest to the room. By finding use for your corners, you will open up floor space, which will give the illusion of a larger room.
If such an abundance of visual tips and tricks isn’t enough to compensate for the lack of excess square footage in your home – reconsider that extension or conversion. It may be a costly addition but it’s still far cheaper than upsizing, and it will add a ton of value to your home.
