A Makeshift Hammer
Sometimes you need to hammer something in place and don’t have anything available. The good news is that a mallet hammer can get the job done easily. Though not as hard as a traditional metal hammer, a wooden mallet hammer can deliver more than enough force to drive nails and other fasteners into place effectively.
Just keep in mind that a wooden mallet hammer is not ideal for every scenario where you need to deliver a blow. If you use it on hard metal fasteners too often, you can do damage to the mallet. Gauges and knicks might not seem like that big of a deal but can really add up over time, wearing down your mallet before long.
Driving Pins into Wood
At the end of the day, a lot of your home projects are going to involve hammering of some sort. When it comes to woodworking, having a wooden mallet hammer can be perfect for driving dowel pins into the various wood types you may work with. Dowel pins are meant to join two pieces of wood together, similar to your average fastener.
The process is really easy, too. Line up your dowel pin in the hole you have already drilled. Gently tap the dowel in with the wooden mallet and keep going until the dowel sits flush. Without a doubt, the most common use of a wooden mallet hammer is in the assembly of wooden furniture. Putting together furniture is oftentimes a bit more delicate than putting together pre-built furniture that you would buy from a big box store. Those make use of fasteners like bolts or screws, but furniture assembly typically uses the aforementioned dowels or joints.
The key to proper furniture assembly is joining the pieces together without doing any damage. A wooden mallet hammer is more ideal for this kind of application, especially with softer types of wood where dents, scratches, and dings can become much more prevalent. A wooden mallet hammer has enough force to join those two joints together without the threat of damage that cannot be undone.
Striking a Chisel
Another common use of a wooden mallet hammer for woodworking purposes is in the striking of chisels. Using a chisel is quite common when woodworking, carving shapes, patterns, and angles into the wood piece that you are working with. Chisels are able to create smaller grooves, indentations, and other shapes than would be achieved otherwise.
If you don’t use a mallet, however, a chisel becomes a lot tougher to use. Using the hammer on the mallet gives you much greater control over your strikes and, by proxy, where those chisel strikes land. If you plan on doing a lot of detailed woodworking, a chisel and mallet are going to become your tool of preference. Using a regular hammer on chisels would not only do damage to the surface you are working on but the chisels as well.
