How to make your garden more attractive to potential homebuyers

If youre selling your home, chances are youre putting a lot of effort into making sure the house looks its best. When doing so, its vital not to forget about the garden – especially areas at the front of the house, since first impressions can make all the difference between your property being snapped up quickly and sitting on the market for months.

If youre selling your home, chances are youre putting a lot of effort into making sure the house looks its best. When doing so, its vital not to forget about the garden – especially areas at the front of the house, since first impressions can make all the difference between your property being snapped up quickly and sitting on the market for months.

To give you a little inspiration, Ive put together a few ideas for how you can make your garden more attractive to potential buyers.

1) Mowing, trimming and pruning

The first step is probably the most obvious: keep the lawn mowed, bushes trimmed and plants pruned. These simple maintenance jobs are all likely to be part of your regular garden routine, but when youre busy trying to sell your house and looking for a new one for yourself at the same time, these things can easily fall by the wayside.

However, if youre serious about selling your home in good time, be sure to make time for them. Small details like unkempt lawns and overgrown plants can easily put buyers off – especially if its the first thing they see when they arrive.

2) Colour

If you dont already have flowers in your garden (after all, not all of us have green fingers!), its worth thinking about planting some while youre trying to sell. You could just arrange these in pots, perhaps around the patio or the edge or the lawn, or you could create a few small flower beds.

The splash of colour these will provide is bound to make your garden a more attractive place, which has the potential to boost your propertys appeal among buyers.

3) Tidy up

You wouldnt usher potential buyers into your home without first tidying up, so make sure you dont do so with your garden. If you have children, its quite likely there will be some kids toys lying around (especially if its summer), so clear these away well before guests arrive.

Similarly, take care to remove items such as broken plant pots or any rubbish that may have found its way into the garden. Should you store bins here, it is worth considering moving them to a side of the house where they cant be spotted – or at least tucking them away in a corner.

4) Dont forget the garden shed

When sprucing up the garden, its important not to forget the garden shed. Now, whether you plan to renovate a metal shed or a wooden one, there will be some basic maintenance tasks that you should be already carrying out on a regular basis, so hopefully they will not need too much work.

If you have a metal shed, the key thing to remember is to look out for rust and treat it immediately – you definitely dont want any of this showing when potential buyers are looking around. Should you have a wooden version, make sure it has recently had a fresh lick of waterproof coating or paint and that there is no discernible damage.

When youve done that, take a look at the inside. If it resembles like a poorly organised jumble sale in there, its definitely worth tidying up; this way, buyers will immediately link the space with utility in their minds.

You could also consider renovating it in a whole new way, perhaps turning it into a hobby room or home office. If you do, make sure you add some homey touches, like photos or carpet.

5) Show off the garden to its best effect

Finally, take the opportunity to really show off your garden. Should you be giving people tours during the summer, theres no better time to do this. By laying out outdoor furniture and perhaps treating guests to a refreshing cold drink on the lawn, you can give them an impression of how they themselves could enjoy the space if they decide to purchase the property. Just remember not to let things get too cluttered!
