What Should You Do if Your Drains Are Blocked?

Having a blocked drain is one of the most inconvenient occurrences when you’re a homeowner.

You might start to notice an unpleasant odour spreading around your home or the sink taking longer to drain when you’re washing the dishes. In some cases, your sink might stop draining altogether.

Your drains can get blocked at any moment. Over time, dirt and food can build up in the drainpipe and block water flow through it. As a result, the water sits stagnant in the pipe and doesn’t drain away from your home.

You don’t need to replace the kitchen when you want to fix a blocked drain. You can call a professional drain services company to fix the problem quickly and easily.

A professional service will be able to identify the obstruction in your drainpipes. They can use the best equipment to remove the blockage and encourage water flow through the pipes once again.

However, if you want to try and tackle the problem yourself, there are some home remedies that you can try before you call a professional company. Here are some great DIY things that you can do to unblock a blocked drain.

Boiling Water

Sometimes, simply pouring boiling hot water down the drainpipe can do the trick. The hot water can break down built-up dirt and can encourage the movement of materials away from the blockage site.

All you need to do is boil a kettle full of water and pour it gently down the drainpipe. Try not to pour too much at a time because this will cause the water to splash and potentially land on your skin.

Wait a couple of seconds between each pour and allow the hot water to do its thing! It’s the fastest and simplest way to get rid of blockages and can free up your drains in just a few minutes.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

The combination of baking soda and vinegar works a treat when you’re trying to unblock your trains. They create a fizzy mixture that dissolves blockages quickly.

Mix together a third of a cup of baking soda and a third of a cup of vinegar, and carefully pour it down the drain. It should start to work immediately and the blockage should have disappeared within a few hours. After this time has passed, flush the soda and vinegar away with hot water.

Plunger

You can’t beat the classics! Using a plunger is an effective way to get rid of blockages and it’s an affordable option when you want to avoid calling a professional plumber.

You’ll need to summon up your inner strength as you use the plunger to remove the blockage. It might take you a few tries to completely remove the blockage but stay patient and you will eventually succeed.

If you don’t manage to completely get rid of the blockage using a plunger, try use hot water or baking soda and vinegar to finish the job.
