Chanel: one of the world’s most legendary brands
Chanel was founded by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who opened her first shop at 21 Rue Cambon in Paris, creating hats under the name Chanel Modes. Her simple, yet elegant designs helped her to establish a reputation amongst Paris’ fashion set.
As word spread and her success grew, she opened a new boutique in Deauville, introducing a collection of women’s sportswear- revolutionary at the time. It was an immediate success and she went on to open her first couture house in Biarritz.
In 1921 Mademoiselle Chanel expanded further, launching her first fragrance, the iconic No 5, so called because it was the fifth scent presented to her. A capsule makeup collection followed shortly after, in 1924.
In the same year she discovered tweed during a trip to Scotland, which inspired her now-iconic women’s suits. In 1931 she found further success when she went to Hollywood to create outfits for leading actresses, catapulting Chanel into a global brand. By 1935, Gabrielle Chanel was at the height of her fame, employing some 4,000 workers spanning five boutiques.
In 1955 another icon was launched, the 2.55 bag, Chanel’s famed quilted handbag, followed in 1957 by the legendary two-tone slingback shoe. With Chanel now coveted by celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Jackie Kennedy, the brand is firmly established as one of the most desired luxury brands in the world. Despite Mademoiselle Chanel’s passing in 1971 her legend lives on as her luxury brand continues to go from strength-to-strength.
