Bank of England maintain interest rates at 0.5%

The Bank of Englands Monetary Policy Committee today announced that it had voted to maintain the interest rates at 0.5% - now being 20 months in a row. It also agreed to maintain, rather than expand, the size of its Asset Purchase Programme at £200 Billion. Looking at the minutes from last months meeting it is clear that there is lively debate and some difference of opion as to whether both interest rates and quantative easing should continue. I often get asked by prospective new investor clients or novice investors the question “What constitutes a good ready made deal?” Therefore, this month I’m going to share with you some of the reasoning that I employ when seeking out potential deals. The thing is with property, each property is different, there is no such thing as “one size fit’s all” and it’s looking for the hidden potential that can make a deal good or even great. Why should you look at a ready made deal? Some investors have plenty of time on their hands although choose to invest in an area that is either not local to them or they are unfamiliar with. Base Rate kept at 0.5%, but has the “Order to shoot” been given?

Base rate kept at 0.5% for 18 consecutive months. Although it had been widely expected to keep the record low interest rates, there are increasing calls to increase rates to curb inflation. Indeed meetings of the MPC meeting shows that for 3 months now 1 member, Andrew Sentance, has voted for a rate rise. The quantitative easing regime was also maintained, but interestingly there are some people who believe this is about to be increased with only the above target inflation figures stopping the decision this month.
