Of course it’s not but it could be causing delays to your business instead of moving it forward.
In this modern day and age there are so many ways to meet new prospects on the internet. Previously in business the only way was with a face to face or telephone contact. These days the world’s your oyster! With all this technology around, you really need to know what you’re doing. Unless you’re a super techie it can be a bit daunting!
There are hundreds, possibly thousands of ways to promote your business over the internet. The question is which methods should you concentrate on? The problem you could have (and we have suffered with this too) is that you can become unfocused. You spend time doing a bit of this and a bit of that and you don’t actually get any results coming through. All this takes a lot of time and you could unfortunately be just wasting effort.
You therefore need to plan a consolidated focused campaign. The question is what do you focus on? We really focus on attracting people to us and building relationships with them. There are many ways to do this with the internet and I wanted to mention a few of the ways to network online.
Social Networking Sites are very popular these days, and there are lots of them about:

These are just a few of the sites available. These sites are excellent, but you can be sucked in to waste a lot of time. However, it’s a great way to meet people and also to reconnect with old friends, family and colleagues. Facebook can be a little annoying sometimes, with people writing on your wall and sending strange applications to you. However if you can get past this it’s a useful site to be on.
You can connect with people who have similar interests to you, so you have a basis to start a discussion. You also may want to connect with people who live in countries where you’d like to expand your business to. There are many groups that you can join to, so you can link with people who have the same interests as you, eg. Property. You can really have fun with this and meet lots of nice people online.
Social networking is becoming one of the major forms of communication for the next generation, so it’s a very useful tool for business and connecting with people.

It’s interesting as once you join one you’re invited to lots more. It used to be that the only way to network for business was that you had to join a local networking group and attend meetings once a week or once a month.
This is of course still a really valid way to network and is a big part of our business strategy. However for a Mum with 2 young daughters to look after, it’s quite difficult to get out to many networking events. I seem to have a lack of volunteers at 6am to babysit, so going to Breakfast meetings is out of the question!
So for me, online business networking is a good thing to have in the mix for my marketing strategy.
You can build some great business relationships online; again you can find people who you have things in common with. Find people who you’d like to work with and make a contact with them.
So in summary, I certainly don’t think that the internet is a total waste of time, but it must be used wisely. Plan a focused and structured campaign and stick to your plan. Don’t spend time in areas you don’t need to, it may be fun and be a good diversion tactic from focusing on your core business, but in the end the only way to build your business fast is to stick to your plan and do it consistently.
