The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that annual house prices in the South West have increased by 3.7 per cent[1], reinforcing the value of self-build properties and renovations in the area. To provide advice and guidance, The South West Homebuilding & Renovating Show, sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, will be taking place again this year at the Bath & West Showground in Somerset from 21-22 November 2015.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, the show’s media partner and Britain’s best-selling self-build publication, the event will encourage self-builders and renovators to make the most of the resources available including the latest services and products, insightful seminars and masterclasses and free one-on-one consultations with property experts who are at the forefront of the industry.

Over the course of the two days, visitors who need guidance on building a home from scratch or advice on how to progress with an existing renovation or extension project, will have the opportunity to interact with like-minded people on a similar mission. They will also be able to meet with over 140 exhibitors who will provide them with tips, tricks of the trade and a wide range of products and services to suit all tastes and budgets. Help will be at hand for queries about heating; doors & windows; bathrooms; kitchens; flooring; lighting and much more.

For the first time at the exhibition, Farrow & Ball, a renowned international company that manufactures and distributes high quality paints and wallpapers, will be joining the event to showcase a colour palette of 132 shades, which has been produced using age-old methods. Based in Dorset, the business’ creative inspiration is derived from the history, nature and beautiful British landscape. The company’s experts will help visitors choose from a wide range of interior and exterior finishes to balance colour schemes inside and outside their home.

Exhibitors will also share their experiences on stage at the Masterclass Theatre, where popular topics including building regulations; insurance for home renovators, extenders and self-builders; underfloor heating and renewable heating systems, to name just a few, will be debated and thoroughly explained.

For bespoke advice from people with first-hand experience, The Advice Centre is a mandatory stop. Here, property experts will discuss visitors’ plans from start to finish and will be on hand to answer every enquiry. With years of practice under their belts, the specialists will guide keen self-builders and renovators through every step of the process in their plans and will explain how they can avoid stumbling blocks along the way.

For those at the early stages of a project, Sally Tagg and her team from The Planning Clinic will clarify the key requirements to bear in mind when applying for planning permission and will also brief people on how to turn an unsuccessful application into a positive outcome. Sally’s presentations will answer many of the commonly asked questions about the planning and permitted development rights maze, so visitors are advised to attend.

A key element of any project is choosing a suitable architect, as these skilled experts can turn a dream house into a reality. The exhibition will welcome chartered specialists from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), who will offer free consultations at the Ask an Architect area to those keen to hear a professional’s opinion on how to add value and creativity to a project.

Experts from Potton, renowned for building sustainable timber homes, will also be available for extensive appointments at the Potton Design Lounge, to provide guidance on how to incorporate oak frames into every area of a house.

Regular columnists from Homebuilding & Renovating magazine will provide individual 15-minute consultations at the Ask the Experts zone: Michael Holmes (editor-in-chief of Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine); Jason Orme (editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine); Chris Reeves (Homebuilding & Renovating magazine’s legal expert and chartered builder and lawyer); David Snell (Homebuilding & Renovating magazine’s self-build and plot finding expert); Tim Pullen (expert in sustainable building and energy efficiency in the home) and Bob Branscome (chartered surveyor and builder).

To ensure that visitors take advantage of all the features on offer to them at the show, consumers will be provided with an event planner to create a personalised map to help them plan their day. This will be available a week before the event on the show’s website.
