As an energy source, heating with oil gets a lot of bad press: too expensive, dirty and inefficient, not to mention non-renewable. In the past, some of these criticisms may have been true but modern oil heating systems have moved on significantly, and for many retail and commercial properties, there is no other option. So how can you get the best system?
Boiler
If you’ve got an old boiler, there’s little doubt that you’ll be wasting energy, therefore money. Modern, condensing boilers are highly efficient, with those rated ‘A’ being the best. In addition to fuel efficiency, modern boilers are highly reliable. Whether you need it for heat only or heat and hot water, a new boiler is worth the investment. And don’t be tempted to guess at the size you need. Get a few suppliers to come in, chat to you about your exact requirements and measure the property. Quotes can vary wildly, so doing your own research never hurts.
Flow Meter
In addition to installing the boiler that’s appropriate for your business, you need to be able to accurately measure fuel consumption with a flow meter. You’ll need a meter that isn’t affected by temperature or oil viscosity, thereby ensuring accurate readings. Many of these meters are tamper-proof as well. Whether you opt for a traditional mechanical counter or digital display, you’ll want the most efficient and reliable flow meter available, such as those sold by Commercial Fuel Solutions.
Multiple room controls
Don’t rely on one thermostat when heating your premises. As some areas will be used less frequently, by having multiple controls, you can set these individually, resulting in greater savings. Some of these offer greater convenience by being operated remotely.
Insulation
Your water cylinder(s) should have the thickest insulation jacket(s) possible; it’s amazing how much heat is lost through gaps or thinner coverings. Hopefully your property will be insulated up to current building regs. but it’s always wise to check. And it’s a good idea to ensure any holes in the roof are fixed – another potential heat giveaway.
Reducing Energy Consumption Further
Another option to consider, which will further reduce your energy bills, is to install solar panels to heat your water and leave the oil for heating only. At our latitude, it’s impractical to suggest that the average commercial enterprise go completely renewable, but a partial switch is definitely possible.
Modern oil heating systems can be more efficient than gas and can be more economical to run than you think.
