In Common Law, The Law of Adverse Possession is well-rooted. This law was introduced at the time of William the Conqueror in 1066.

So, what is this law? It states that if you can hold land or property without permission for 10 or 12 years, depending on whether it is registered or not, you can claim full legal title to it. If the claim is successful then congratulations, it is yours and you are free to do as you like with it!

That means that, any empty or abandoned house, building or plots of land could be yours for free! The law says that they should not be left empty so it lets you claim them as your own.

In fact, you can profit from the land or property during the waiting period. The law states that you can treat the land of property as if it is your own. It also stated that the land or property should not stand idle, it should actually be owned and used.
