6 DIY Budget-Friendly Kitchen Makeover Ideas

If it looks like your kitchen is stuck in the past, or if it just looks boring or bland, you’ve probably thought about renovating it. It can be very expensive to renovate your kitchen. However, you shouldn’t let this hold you back. There are plenty of ways you can breathe new life into your kitchen and not break the bank.

Here are some ideas I would recommend looking into as an option.

The Miracle of Salvage and Second Hand

One of the more simple ideas to give your kitchen a makeover is to salvage old pieces of furniture and place them in your kitchen. For example, one idea is taking an old machine shop table and place a butcher’s block on top of it to create a tiny island. You could take old bar stools and set them up by an empty counter to turn it into a mini bar. You can salvage furniture from other parts of the house or from your friends. You can also buy second hand furniture cheaply and use your creative wit to give your kitchen a new feel. Maybe not best suited to everyone, but I think its definitely very much in vogue and it is, in my opinion anyway, the way to get a kitchen with character.

Change the Hardware on Cabinets and Drawers

Getting new hinges, knobs, and pulls on your cabinets and drawers can give your kitchen “a different look”:http://traditionalpainter.com/refurbish-a-kitchen-the-options. New hardware can be really inexpensive, and can be changed with the use of a few household tools. If I can do it, trust me, so can you.

Resurface Countertops

It might be hard to believe, but stripping a laminate countertop off of plywood is actually really simple. Installing a new laminate countertop will only cost you about 20 to 25 pounds per linear foot. You can also add ceramic tile over plywood for a very low cost. If you have a solid or stone surface that is looking less than pristine, you can polish it or have a professional do it, to remove scuff marks. This isnt the easiest of options, but in my opinion, it really changes the look of a kitchen.

Wooden Ladder Pot Rack

Do you have an old wooden straight ladder around the house or know someone who does? One creative idea to store your pots is to hang the ladder from the ceiling, fit it with hooks, and you can have a stylish pot rack for your kitchen.

Vintage Pop Crate Spice Rack

If you have a vintage soda crate or know someone who does, you can use it to make an attention grabbing spice rack. Drill the crate into the wall (or use another method) and place containers that hold your spices in each of the sections. I have found some incredible old pieces on eBay (French wine racks, antique wooden barrels, etc.) that are just perfect for adding a personal and stylish touch.

Creative Kitchen Containers

Kitchen containers, the containers you use to store your bake goods and foods like sugar, flour, cookies, salt, pepper and the like, can be used to spruce up a kitchen. You can purchase these in various shapes or sizes (animals are a popular type) at many local stores and online. It isn’t technically a craft project, but for those short on time and not inclined toward tools, it’s a great way to liven up the kitchen.

Maintenance for kitchen appliances is another thing that you simply must take into consideration. Of course there will always be promises of long lasting reliability, but in my experience there will always be problems. All too often though, this is an aspect that gets overlooked. Im speaking from personal experience here. Be forewarned: that cheap dishwasher might save you money now, but when it breaks down, it could end up costing you a fortune to get repaired.

These are just some ideas to get you started. There are many other budget friendly ways to liven up your kitchen. Just do a little research, give it a little thought, and you can give your kitchen a fresh new feel.
