5 Ways To Protect Your Family Against Coronavirus

COVID-19, or the coronavirus, has turned our world topsy turvy in the last several months; it leaves us with many fears about protecting our loved ones, safeguarding our own health, and preventing the spread of the virus to others.

What is the coronavirus?

The coronavirus is a fast-spreading, respiratory disease that has taken over many parts of the world since its initial outbreak in November of 2019. Originating in China, it has caused illness, infection, and death in many parts of the world. As numbers continue to rise and many nations are now taking precautions to ensure that the virus does not reach critical mass, many of us are taking steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this debilitating disease.

How can we protect ourselves?

With an increasing number of countries going on lockdowns and implementing shelter-in-place orders, there are additional precautions we can take to ensure our safety and the safety of others. Follow these Emergency Preparedness Plan for staying safe and healthy during the thick of the coronavirus outbreak:

  1. Avoid exposure

The virus is thought to spread from person to person; primarily those that are within six feet of each other. Avoiding exposure by minimizing close contact with others is your best line of defense against the coronavirus. If you yourself develop symptoms of coughing, sneezing, or fever, quarantine yourself and practice proper hygiene by washing hands frequently, using tissues, and disposing of trash appropriately. Consider the use of a face mask if you know that you are working with others that have been exposed to the virus, and work to minimize your continued exposure by staying at home and indoors.

  1. Wash hands often

Washing your hands at various times during the day with soap and water for at least 30 seconds will reduce the spread of germs significantly. Consider washing:

  • Before and after meals
  • After using the bathroom
  • After being in public places
  • If you have been around someone who shows symptoms
  • If you suspect you have been exposed to germs

Implementing this simple hygiene practice will significantly reduce the chances of contracting the coronavirus.

To properly wash your hands:

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands thoroughly with soap, making sure to scrub all surfaces such as nails and in between fingers.
  3. Scrub hands completely for at least 30 seconds.
  4. Rinse hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry hands with a clean, dry towel or air dry them.
  1. Consider a mask and gloves

If you are going out in public, or if you work in a place that is considered an essential business, consider the use of a mask and gloves to protect you from contact with public surfaces. If you must take your children out, make sure they are properly outfitted with masks and gloves too, to minimize the potential for contact with the virus. In doing so, you are not only protecting yourselves, you are protecting those you come in contact with from the potential spread of the virus.

  1. Clean and disinfect

Make sure to clean and disinfect high traffic areas regularly—-daily, if possible. Tables, handles, doorknobs, desks, countertops, phones, and sinks are areas that are used regularly; safeguarding yourself and your loved ones by cleaning these areas frequently will reduce the spread of germs and bacteria.

  1. If you do get sick…….

If you find yourself coming down with symptoms, monitor them closely. Signs of coronavirus infection include:

  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent coughing
  • Chest pains

If you find that any of these symptoms are worsening, call your doctor immediately to see what the next steps are for treatment. There are specific protocols that must be followed to prevent the spread of infection and disease; following these will ensure that you minimize the consequences of and the spread of infection.

Taking proper precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is an absolutely vital step in helping us to create a healthier society. We are not only managing society right now, we are setting ourselves up for future success and vibrant health. We have a responsibility to protect ourselves and each other; do what you can to weather the storm with your loved ones, and we’ll all come out stronger on the other side.
